Detailed itinerary
- Journey Time: Approx. 5.5 hours drive (or domestic flight available)
- Highlight: Crossing the Equator and arriving in the rugged north.
Your safari begins early in the morning as your professional driver-guide picks you up from your Nairobi hotel or airport. Head north through lush agricultural country, crossing the equator, into the arid and striking landscapes of Samburu. Arrive at your lodge in time for lunch. In the afternoon, embark on your first game drive along the banks of the Ewaso Ng'iro River, the lifeline of this dry ecosystem.
- Highlight: The "Samburu Special Five"
Spend a full day exploring Samburu and its sister reserves, Buffalo Springs and Shaba. Keep your cameras ready for the Samburu Special Five—animals uniquely adapted to northern Kenya: the Grevy’s Zebra, Reticulated Giraffe, Beisa Oryx, Gerenuk (the giraffe-necked antelope), and the Somali Ostrich. Enjoy a picnic lunch by the river or relax at the lodge during the midday heat before an evening game drive.
- Journey Time: Approx. 3 hours drive
- Highlight: Meeting the last two Northern White Rhinos on Earth.
After breakfast, depart Samburu and drive south to the magnificent Ol Pejeta Conservancy, nestled between the foothills of the Aberdares and Mount Kenya. Ol Pejeta is a pioneer in conservation. After lunch and check-in, visit the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary (the only place in Kenya to see chimps) and pay a visit to Najin and Fatu—the world's last remaining Northern White Rhinos.
- Journey Time: Approx. 4 hours drive
- Highlight: Rhinos against the backdrop of a soda lake.
Depart Ol Pejeta after breakfast and drive down into the Great Rift Valley, arriving at Lake Nakuru National Park by lunchtime. Nakuru is a rhino sanctuary, offering incredible sightings of both black and white rhinos. The park is also famous for its tree-climbing lions, leopards, and thousands of flamingos (water levels permitting) painting the shoreline pink. Enjoy an afternoon game drive up to Baboon Cliff for panoramic views of the lake.
- Journey Time: Approx. 5-6 hours drive
- Highlight: Entering the legendary Masai Mara.
Leaving the Rift Valley lakes behind, drive southwest across the floor of the valley, passing through Narok town, and into the world-famous Masai Mara National Reserve. Arrive in time for lunch at your tented camp or lodge. After a short rest, head out for your very first afternoon game drive in the Mara. The golden hour here offers phenomenal photography opportunities of lions, cheetahs, and endless herds of herbivores.
- Highlight: Full immersion in the wild; optional Mara River crossing.
Today is dedicated to full exploration of the Masai Mara. You can opt to carry packed lunch boxes and spend the entire day tracking the Big Five across the sprawling savannah. If traveling between July and October, you may witness the breathtaking Great Wildebeest Migration river crossings, where millions of wildebeest and zebras brave crocodile-infested waters. In the evening, optionally visit a traditional Maasai Manyatta (village) to learn about their rich culture and traditional dances.
- Journey Time: Approx. 5 hours drive
- Highlight: Afternoon boat ride amongst hippos and fish eagles.
After a final early morning game drive in the Mara and breakfast, depart for Lake Naivasha, a freshwater lake sitting serenely in the Rift Valley. Arrive in time for lunch. In the afternoon, enjoy a boat safari on the lake. You will glide close to pods of hippos, spot numerous exotic bird species, and stop at Crescent Island for a guided walking safari amongst giraffes, zebras, waterbucks, and impalas, completely unbothered by human presence.
- Journey Time: Approx. 5.5 hours drive
- Highlight: Approaching the mountain of Kilimanjaro.
After breakfast, journey southeast past Nairobi and down toward the southern borderlands into Amboseli National Park. Amboseli is famous for its massive herds of free-roaming elephants featuring impressive tusks, set against the magnificent backdrop of Africa's highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro (weather permitting). Check into your lodge and head out for an afternoon game drive across the dusty, wildlife-rich plains and seasonal swamps.
- Highlight: Observation Hill views and elephant families at the swamps.
Spend a full day discovering Amboseli. Visit Observation Hill, where you can step out of the vehicle and enjoy a panoramic view of the swamps below, dotted with elephants, buffaloes, hippos, and flocks of flamingos, with Kilimanjaro towering in the background. Take morning and afternoon game drives, maximizing your chances of spotting lions and cheetahs hunting in the open dust plains
- Journey Time: Approx. 4 hours drive
- Highlight: Final memories and departure.
Enjoy a leisurely breakfast and a final morning game drive as you exit Amboseli. Drive back to Nairobi, arriving in the afternoon. Depending on your departure schedule, your driver will drop you off at your hotel or directly at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for your international flight home, carrying memories that will last a lifetime!
